If you enjoy throwing $6400 out of the window of your car, then by all means, buy the plasma tv. If youre looking for a decent tv that will last your for a very long time, go with the LCD. While, plasma screen tvs do have a slightly better picture quality than LCDs, their(plasma) lifespans are only about 7-8 years, maximum. Most only last 5-6 years. Some people will try to bullsh** you by saying "Well, they havent been out for that long, how would you know." Well, I know, and so do the people that manufacture them, and so do the people that own them. Another point that you can make is the PS2/other game systems problem, on a plasma tv, if you leave a game system on for an extended period of time, images will become burned into the plasma screen. LCDs, while bulkier, do not have these problems. To me, people that own plasma screen tvs are just like the idiots who own hybrid cars, the only reason they buy them is so that they brag about it to their friends, in the event that the yuppie a-holes even have any. To be simple about it, if want to buy a good Hi-Def tv without spending a small fortune go with the LCD. If you have a couple of extra bucks to spend, I'd recommend DLP, but thats another story.

I gave this answer before, and I repeat it here:
You have to decide based on actually looking at the pictures and features, but briefly, here are some key factors:
Picture quality of plasma is brighter, better color, better blacks than LCD.
Sharpness is the same for equivalent pixel counts. Some newer LCDs have 1080 x 1920 resolution, most plasmas still in the 720 x 1250 range.
Plasma is heavier and uses more power.
There are reports that plasmas are not as reliable, but that may not be true with the latest models.
Plasmas are subject to burn-in. A stationary image left on the screen for a long time could produce a permanent ghost image. The most risk is when viewing a lot of 4:3 ratio pictures (non-HD), which are displayed with vertical dark areas on the left and right to fill in the wide screen. There are ways to minimize this, however. many sets have a "stretch" mode which widens the picture to fill the whole screen.
Plasmas come in largers sizes, although large LCDs are coming out, but they are expensive.
I assume you are referring to flat-panel LCDs. There are rear-projection TV using LCDs and other technologies that produce excellent pictures, but projection sets are larger.

I should go for LCD. Plasma looks great but remember it's a pressurized gas, it doesn't last long. LCD lasts longer and it's the trend, in some years LCD will beat Plasma.

dont beleive all that crap about plasmas lasting only 5 years! the LG 42 inch plasma widescreen hdtv has a life span of 60 000 hours! 60000/24 = 2500 days
2500/365 = 6.85 years.
now if your plasma tv is on 24 hours a day it would last you 6.85 years. since no one has his tv on 24 hrs a day i think it would last like at least 9 yrs. Thats pretty much the same life span as any other BIG tvs.
The lcd tvs are much more expensive and you cant get them as big as the plasmas. I have a 57 inch toshiba projection hdtv and i love it but i wanna sell it to get that LG plasma tv. it retails at 2600$ cnd and a 40 in SONY LCD retails at 3700$ cnd.
before buying your tv make sure you go look at alot of different places and ask them for prices and compare them all. but if you go with plasma make sure you check its lifespan.

LCD. Plasma tv's cost too much and are only made to last 5 to 7 years before the plasma tube goes out. Then you call a repairman out for a $250 service call and who knows how much to replace the tube. Too much money to spend on crap.

plasma runs hotter and is said to suffer from burn in. lcd uses less energy, it's very similar to the screen of your laptop computer.both give very good image, so you really need to try and see which you like best and you can afford.

LCD .......duh, plasmas usually get heated up quickly and they can melt if they get too hot. LCD also can be seen at any angle. If you talk about an LCD projection though, they come a lot larger and are a lot cheaper, but can only see at a certain angle.
