Islam isn't against a Muslim changing his/her faith. Islam advocates both freedom of religion and freedom of conscience, a position supported by verses in the Quran, Islam's revealed text, such as:
1) ‘If it had been the will of your Lord that all the people of the world should be believers, all the people of the earth would have believed! Would you then compel mankind against their will to believe?’ (10:99)
2) ‘(O Prophet) proclaim: 'This is the Truth from your Lord. Now let him who will, believe in it, and him who will, deny it.'’ (18:29)
3) ‘If they turn away from thee (O Muhammad) they should know that We have not sent you to be their keeper. Your only duty is to convey My message.’ (42:48)
4) ‘Let there be no compulsion in religion.’ (2:256)
Apostacy doesn't apply to a person changing his/her faith. There is a report where a person changed his faith and Prophet (pbuh) aware of his action did not harm him.

For a 'sworn' Muslim to recant his faith and take allegiance with another religion is worst than an infidel.
An infidel is ignorant and lost. The Muslim who recants is a liar to his original oath and a traitor. They tend to frown on such things to say the least. And besides, it motivates muslims to take their oath to Allah VERY seriously.
The western countries treat traitors the same way... they shoot them. Ask the Rosenbergs after WW2.
PS. I think the (almost) christian chruches of today can learn a little something about this. When's the last time you heard of someone having their membership revoked from a local church for violating church / christian doctrine(s)?? I'm sure it happens, but in the 20 plus years I've been going to church, I've never seen it. I think the church has become a little limp-wristed if you ask me. They're weak since, typically, they want money.

Do you know of any religion that does not have this rule? It is in the texts even though it is not practiced. A little mini example is, imagine you became Muslim and you told your parents?

Being call to death is a better punishment in this world than being punished and tortured in great pain in Hell..you just can imagine nothing out of it as to how the punisment will be in the Hell..
When a muslim changed his faith, we muslim felt that we need to save him from being punish later after-life..we care a lot for our fellow muslims..
Allah s.w.t has created you and expect you to be thankful and submit and loyal to Him..but human tends to forget and think they have the right to be in freewill and they think can do what ever they like and forget about their own creator..
example..your mom gave birth to you to this world..raised and cared for you..afterwhich when you're older enough you can shout and ill-treated her instead..what do you think about that..

uh, western nations don't shoot traitors anymore... in the US, we don't even prosecute them anymore... it's sad but true. What is also true, is Muslim countries kill those who decide to follow another religion, the latest case being the Afghan aid worker who fled to Italy because the clerics were calling for his death... religion of peace and understanding? - don't think so.
