Your friend is a nut head. No formaldehyde is not used when jarring maraschino cherries.

I remember distinctly reading the labels of maraschino cherries, back in the 70's and formaldehyde was listed as an ingredient. I would tell my friends who wouldn't believe me, and I would show them a label. Probably the biggest FDA scandal of all time LOL...It is true, they used to use it, now they either changed the ingredient oe changed name of it.

No, it is not true.
HOWEVER.
The dye used in them is a pesticide, and some people do get sick from.
*maraschino cherrys without the dye are almost white.

They are treated with sulfur not formaldehyde. Some people are sensitive to sulfur.
