After running a 40 mile week on concrete, i have recieved my first case of shin splints...im taking it easy and resting this week, but i am leaving for bootcamp in 12 days...my question is, can shin splints, if i run on them continuously, cause permantent damage to the bone, or tissue? Pain is no object, i just want to know if it will cause unrecoverable injury?

very mixed answers....i havent run on it in 4 days...it doesnt hurt when i walk on it at all, only tender when i touch....is it on the way to healing? ive been iceing it every day and wrapping it in gauze after because i read that can help alleviate tension in the muscle....how much longer till im good to go???

Yes, shin splints can cause permanent damage. Having a doctor as a father a having done track and field, I know this to be true. Sure there are ways to heal shin splints, like icing it and massaging, and stretching it. However the best treatment is REST. It'd true, no matter how much you ice it, it won't get better unless you rest it. If you ignore the pain and keep running on them you WILL suffer permanent damage. After running on this type of injury, if and when you ever heal, your legs will never be the same;you will never completely heal the bone and muscle tissue. My advice is to rest: your shins will thank you later on in life.

Have you seen a doctor? Are you sure it is shin splints? These are painful and will get worse as you go along. Get some medical help. As for permanent damage - don't know, but your doctor can help you. Pain is not a good sign and always indicates something needs to be done. Perhaps your shoes aren't right or your running gate is off - but first take care of the shin splints then find a preventative measure...

I have had shin splints for three years now. Anyone who plays sports knows how hard it is to rest because you love the sport so much. I will tell you as hard as it sounds, REST! my shin splints started when I played high school basketball and the pain began to be mild. I would continue to play and ignore it. Then It started to get worse so wearing high socks seemed to help a lot when playing. The pain got worse over the years and the socks didn t help. I began to do calf raises. I would do a lot. Then I developed pain in the sides of my calfs. I kept ignoring the pain until three years later when I couldn t play basketball for more then five minutes without having to stop. My feet began to go numb when I would play to. So coming from someone who didn t "rest", don t make the same mistake I did because my legs will probably never be the same. I most likely have permanent nerve damage as a result and the sides of my legs are constantly inflamed

Shin splints are just the tendons pulling on the bones (the tendons connect muscle to bone) It hurts but it will go away. No permanent damage. But treat it like a muscle after lifting and let it heal after heavy running.

I was discharged from the Army many years ago for shin splints. (I was also Pregnant) I have occasional flare ups. More during stressful times. See a doctor to confirm the diagnosis. Stretching exercises and hot compresses help a lot.

yes they can.. I have permanent tissue damage from shin splints. they can turn into stress fractures very easily. take it easy on the running for the next couple weeks, and ice your shins every day before you run and after you run. Maybe investi in some new, high quality runnign shoes too. GOod luck at boot camp.

The best thing I can tell you is to talk to your doctor. Honestly, I don't think anyone on here can tell you unless they are a physician (and thay could lie). I'm just trying to help.

if you run on tem continuously while they are hurting, yes they will cause damage. just relax and give them a break and you should be up and running in no time.

area just needs to become desensitized but you just don't want to cause perm. damage...have doctor check it out
