Every time I try to make a martini- it comes out WAY too strong! I always thought that an ounce was equivalent to a shot glass- but apparently not!

two jiggers of your favorite potato juice(vodka) and mix in a little juice from the olives and add olives. Make sure you have your glass chilled and also add lots of ice to vodka when you shake.

A martini is pure alcohol - it will always be strong. You can try to dirty it up even more, but then you are kind of defeating the purpose of a martini - you're basically drinking olive brine with alcohol.

Make sure you are using very pure top quality alcohol, too. Absolut is not good for a clean martini. There are far better choices than Tanq for a gin martini. For Vodka, Ketel One, Grey Goose, Belvedere, and some of the 'boutique' vodkas are your best bets. Even Stoli because it is so clean tasting. For Gin, Boodles, Hendricks, Sapphire, and even Tanq 10 (I don't like 10 at all) are some great ones to try.

Also, be sure you are serving it really really cold. This will make the gin or vodka taste cleaner. And always handle the glass by the stem - your fingers on the actual drink part will heat the drink up.

You can also try minimizing the vermouth. Some people who don't like martinis find that they don't like it 'dry' (with vermouth). Try simply coating the glass with vermouth and dumping out the excess.

If you don't like the taste of the alcohol, then it may be time to switch drinks. Martinis are supposed to be strong.

Good luck in perfecting your recipe!

the secret to a great dirrrty martini is to muddle a couple of cocktail olives in the bottom of the shaker before adding the ice and vodka and olive juice. If you think a martini is too strong, maybe you should try something else...since a martini is pretty much just straight vodka. Try vodka and soda water with an olive instead.

Get a jigger--its a metal double cone that will more accurately measure your pour, and if you want it very dirty use 1 part olive juice to two parts good gin or vodka depending on your preference.
