When the dog is sleeping and you wake him up either by sound or by touch, he tries to snap at you. Never had a dog that did that before. Could it be a function of the mix. Ohterswise a great dog and companion.

Your dog should not growl at you, EVER, even if it does have rotweiller in it.

Think of you and your dog as a pack - is your dog top dog? If he's growling, he's telling you off and telling you what to do. He thinks he's more important in the pack than you.

Question: have you ever seen a normal pack member tell of an alpha male/female wolf? No. What happens if they do? They get growled at and the lesser pack member rolls over to submit.

You need to assert your position as alpha male/female and let your dog know . I'm not talking about being horrible - it's just a matter of speaking dog.

To speak dog, you need to learn the sounds and the posture. Dogs don't understand words, they understand sounds. You need to learn to growl. Get your voice down really low and growl 'NO'. You need to make yourself look big and keep growling. Eventually what you will see is that your dog will lift his back leg and show you his belly. This is him submitting to you. He sould stay their for a few seconds. At this point you need to make a fuss of your dog and give him a good tummy tickle and tell him he's a goo boy etc. in a nice high pitched voice. This showed him he did the right thing by submitting to you.

In this situation in a wolf pack, the alpha will alway groom or lick the lesser pack-member once it has submitted. This is how they cement the bond of the pack and let all the pack know who is boss.

This might seem extreme jsut for a little growl, but this kind of thing can soon progress into the dog being dominant or possesive of food/toys etc. This can lead to much more serious behavioural problems, such as aggression.

I dont have any such problems with my rott, so that other person is wrong. I would assume the dog is just tempermental like some humans, I know I could snap at someone if they woke me up too. But I would consult a vet and consider what action need to be taken for safety especially if you have children. I know my fiance had a dog before (not a rott or lab) that bit someone's face when the guy snuck up on the dog and scared him. He never bit anyone else, but the guy must have scared him and he was defending himself.

He might just not want to be woken up. Black Labs are the greatest dogs on earth, it problay comes from the rottwiller. If he has been gitting lack of sleep latley he might just be cranky
good luck

How happy are you when someone wakes you from a nice warm dream??
Some animal don't like to be startled, & waking them quickly is startling! Labs are generally gentle dogs & Rotties can be wonderful lap dogs...well...they think they are, anyway. It shouldn't be "in the mix" as aggression is mostly learned.
Every animal is different, learn this one & respect it.

have his eyes checked, sometimes when they have a hard time seeing they protect themselfs right off the bat not knowing who or what is their. Or maybe he does just have a bad temper, some dogs do, just in there breeding. Is it an older dog? did you gethim from someone that could have abused him? Good luck.

I would let him sleep, ho obviously needs it. How would you like it if some one kept waking you up when you slept. If you are really worried then you should talk to your vet or a dog trainer

He is wanting to be the alpha you must not let him get away with this as it will lead to more problems down the road. You must establish yourself as the pack leader and the best way to do this is to go to obedience class with your dog

Well, we all have our personal space...right? So most likely your dog's personal space is when he is sleeping. Or you might have startled him like a surprise thing because when you are sleeping you are suppose to be calm and everthing. That is pretty much i have to give... Good Luck
