It's a couple thousand year old one-syllable name. The feminine for John. If you want people to use the diminutive, Jeannie, that's up to you. But then you have to spell it with an ie at the end. J-e-a-n-n-e is simply not pronounced Jeannie--except by uncultured idiots.

The traditional prononciation of this spelling is "jean" (as in "blue jeans"). But i think people also have gotten to pronouncing it "jean-ee", although with that pronounciation is should be spelled Jeannie (with the added "i").
