And now, the CORRECT answer.
Here's the problem you have, the way I interpret your situation. If they had sold the car to HER, and everything was in her name, then you would be OK. However, since the car is in YOUR name there could be a problem. I don't know what state you are in, but most states require the purchaser of the car to have a valid license, and insurance, or they cannot legally sell the vehicle. Since they sold the car to you, and you aren't insured, they screwed up...probably the result of an overzealous salesman who wanted a commission. They now need to either officially "sell" the car to your wife who has insurance and a valid license, or undo the deal altogether...or else be exposed to legal ramifications.
These guys want to sell you a car, bottom line, and they don't want to undo the deal. Here's what they will likely do. They will want to put everything in her name, since she is the one who's licensed and insured. They don't care who actually PAYS for it, as long as they get paid.
Then, once you get your license back, she can transfer title back to you, or you can add your name to the title as a co-owner.
Hope this info helped.

I don't think they can make you return the car, as long as the car is insured the loan companies typically do not care whose name it's in. It's no different than a parent buying a car for a child and having the child get his own insurance . . . laws can be funny sometimes though.
Right after he got out of high school my husband had a similar situation -- he traded in his truck for a new (used) vehichle. They approved him for the loan, he signed the papers and left. The next day they called him and told him his loan didn't go through, he needed a co-signer. He said he couldn't get one, so he'd bring the truck back and pick up his old one. The was they had already sold his old truck. Since they couldn't give him back his truck somehow they got his loan work, I'm not sure what they did.
Anyway my point is car dealerships can be crazy sometimes . . .

Laws vary from state to state, but if they sold you the car, I don't think they can take it back unless you miss a payment or don't have it insured. If your wife is carrying full coverage, I don't think they have any legal standing. However, I don't know if she can get comprehensive coverage on a car that is not in her name. She can get liability insurance, but insurance to cover damage or theft could be a different story.
Start with your insurance company and explain the situation to them. If they say her policy covers the car for damage and theft, then the dealer should have no problems with the situation. If they don't agree, have them call the insurance company. As long as their interests are insured, why should they care?

You can't buy a car without proof of insurance. You can't get insurance because you don't have a license. Yes, they can take the car back. If your wife can buy the car with only her income and insure it in her name only, you can change all of that at the DMV when you get your license back and get your name put on it.

I think so....if you can't get insurance without a license then you can't have a new vehicle....the law says you have to have insurance and I don't think any insurance place will cover you without a license...they can take the car away

They should only care that the car is insured. They are probably more concerned that you may drive it and wreck it... in which case it would NOT be insured. Your salesperson probably sold it without the permission of the sales manager and got yelled at.
