Hey. i have a question. my dad has been in the hospital for over 3 months and he was on the pain reliever morphine for almost a month. he is now off of morphine but he seems confused. he will say stuff out of his head and we wondered why he was doing so we asked the doctor and he said it was normal but i was wondering if he would ever get back to his real self and not be confused and talk out of his head. thanks.

He should come around but it depends on what his original injuries were.

I doubt that 3 months of use on morphine has caused this problem. There are people in this world with severe pain illness that wear a morphine set up around their waist, that can push a button and release the proper dose amount thru a stint, into their own system when they need it, every 2-4 hours. (Example, those with severe back problems.) These people generally live out the rest of their life with the help of morphine. If I were you I would talk to his Dr. about a cat scan of his head. It might be a result of something that happened in surgery. Plus one of other option that could cause a problem like this is, some of medicines may not be compatible and hindering him. Its so important that when a person has several prescribed prescriptions, that their pharmacist has a list of every thing they are taking so they could catch a conflex in medicines.

There is so many questions to answer that.
!. Why was your dad on the morphine?
2. How old is your dad and does he have dementia?
3. Does he have a history of confusion?
4. What are his other health issues?
If your dad was in the hospital for 3 months, he must have some serious health issues. Sometimes, when you are sick for a long time, it affects your cognition.
He may get better and then he may not.

3 months of morphine is pretty heavy, but i'd say he's just confused. like waking up with a bad hangover. i was in intensive care for a while with constant morphine. excellent for pain but it takes it's toll. more important is dealing with dependence. 3 months is enough to develop quite a propensity to addiction. hope he gets adequate counseling for that. the fuzzy brain will clear but dependence lurks in the shadows. good luck with this.

I would think after a month,it would be out of his system. If he had a stroke or something, that might be causing the problem,or other illnesses can do that as well

older people take longer for some meds like this to get out of the system;lots of fluids unless contraindicated will help
