The fact that there are five rings is relative to how many continents were participating in the Olympics when the emblem was created. For your reference, this emblem was created by a French man, and approved by the World Congress - it's not an American thing.

Also, the colors in the Olympic rings represent the colors of the flags of all of the countries that participate in the Olympics. Each country has at least one of those colors in their flag.

The emblem chosen to illustrate and represent the world Congress of 1914 ...five intertwined rings in different colours - blue, yellow, black, green, red - are placed on the white field of the paper. These five rings represent the five parts of the world which now are won over to Olympism and willing to accept healthy competition.
The current view of the International Olympic Committee is that the flag "reinforces the idea" that the Olympic Movement is international and welcomes all countries of the world to join. Each ring represent the five continents. Using this scheme, the Americas are viewed as a single continent, and Antarctica is omitted.

What do the Olympic rings signify?
According to most accounts, the rings were adopted by Baron Pierre de Coubertin (founder of the modern Olympic Movement) in 1913 after he saw a similar design on an artifact from ancient Greece. The five rings represent the five major regions of the world: Africa, the Americas, Asia, Europe, and Oceania. Every national flag in the world includes at least one of the five colors, which are (from left to right) blue, yellow, black, green, and red. It is important to emphasize that Pierre de Coubertin never said nor wrote that the colors of the rings were linked with the different continents

The Olympic Flag made its debut at the 1920 Olympic Games in Antwerp, Belgium. At the end of each Olympic Games, the mayor of that host-city presents the flag to the mayor of the next host-city. It then rests at the town hall of the next host-city for four years until the Opening Ceremony of their Olympic Games.

According to Americans there are seven continents:-
North America, South America, Africa, Asia, Europe, Australia, Antartica

According to Europeans there are six continents in which North America and South America are combined to form America.

According to many scientists and geographers there are six continents and in which Europe and Asia are combined to form Eurasia.

According to me when I observe the 5 intersecting rings connected with olympics, the rest of the world believe that there are 5 continents and they are:-North America, South America,Africa,Eurasia and Australia. These continents are united by Olympism. The continent Antartica is omitted from olympics.

The rings do not in fact correspond to continents. Each ring color can be found on each flag (at least one of the 6 colors..which includes the white background).

So to answer your question...Americans believe there are 7 continents on our planet.
