For a start, don't just get a dog because it's small, cute and cheap. You're asking for trouble. Do your research - temperament (personality) is the most important thing in a dog.

Is is friendly with people/kids/other dogs? Are they easy to train? Do they bark alot?

Also, will they suit your lifestyle? Will your lifestyle suit them? How much exercise do they need?

Are there any inherent health problems with a particular breed? For example, Chihuahas are prone to serious knee joint problems and also brain problems caused by the shape of their skull. They are also notoriously difficult to house train. Lhasa Apsos can be prone to a particularly damaging eye disease and respiratory problems. Again, do your research - can you afford the vet bills if anything goes wrong? All pedifree dogs have a some susceptibility to particular health problems. This is the result of the in-breeding required to make a breed look a certain way. Obviously, some breeds have more problems than others. Also, if you buy from a reputable breeder and NOT a puppy farm or pet shop, you will be told by the breeder of any problems in the puppies parents, grandparents etc. In fact, a reputable breeder will not breed from a dog or ***** that has health problems that could be passed down to puppies.

I guess the point is, research first and buy a puppy for the right reasons, not because it's cute. Too many dogs end up in rescue centres because a person didn't know what they were taking on when they bought a puppy. Think carefully, please!

I would really suggest a Fox Terrier (smooth), Beagles are great dogs, beside the fact they always follow there nose and most the times they run away. Westies, are cute but you have to groom them perfectly. Same with Pomaranims. They are very entergetic. Crain Terriers are expensive. A boston terrier and Pug are the cutiest things, but have alot of breathing problems. Fox Terriers are a good choice

short hair-I like boston terriers (if you can stand the snorting that some of this breed do).

If you don't mind having to pay between $20 and $30 a month to have it groomed, a mini schnauzer is cute.

Do research! Some small breeds like to dig or need lots of exercise.

Look into a rescue org. or at a non-kill shelter...lots of good dogs there, and sometimes purebreds!

A jack Russel is well cute and they have a great personality. But I have two Labs. If I was to get a small dog it would be a Jack Russel.

Chihuahuas! They are small, cute and not that expensive! I have a really cute Chihuahua that my aunt gave me and she's pregnant right now and if by any chance you live in El Paso I can sell you one for $200. So, my e-mail is jocy37p@yahoo.com.

Yorkies are so cute and shi zus, especially the tiny ones, they're called tea-cup but from what i've heard from pet stores and vets are that tea cups are just very inbred and wont live very long. but definitly look into Yorkies, they're too cute.

Go to your local pound and find a small-breed mixed breed! You'll be saving a life from a horrible death and it's plenty cheaper than getting a purebred.
