You will only lose muscle from exercise if you 1. don't eat enough calories to fuel you bodies basic needs given your level of activity. 2. You exercise too much. Your body needs periods of activity and rest to BUILD muscle and repair stressed tissue.

Some of the best exercises for hips are:
1. lunges
2. running
3. Hip machines
4. flutter kicks. (lay on your back. raise your feet off the ground about 6", scissor your legs up and down, counting: 1-2-3-1, 1-2-3-2, 1-2-3-3, etc. . . .)
5. double leg raises (You'll need a partener for this one. Lay on your back with your legs together in the air above you. Have a friend take you by your shoes and push your legs to the ground, left right, and in front. It is your job to prevent your legs from hitting the ground, to keep them raised above your body, and to return them to your friend to push again.
6. stairs

Good luck.

If you are happy with your current muscle mass, and just want to dump some fat and get some definition back into your look then you need to definately do some cardio. I dont know the age there but you can look up your ideal heart rate for burning fat. you dont want to run, just a brisk walk on a treadmill, or stairclimber will do. also diet is very important. cut out some carbs, (pasta, bread, beer!, eat more often just smaller portions) That will do it!

Swimming. Training in a pool can help you tone muscles and give you a great workout. Not just swimming laps but treading water, swimming using just your legs (use a kickboard), and they have these great floats that go in between your thighs which lets you just use your arms. Water gives you great resistance to work out your muscles and give you a good enough workout to get your heart going and burn calories. If you spent an hour every day doing these excercises you will see results over a few weeks. I used to swim on a team and i wish i had my abs and muscle tone that i had then, Its worth a try if you like the water.

Running would probably be the best to burn calories. Next would be biking or spinning. Any cardio activity for about 45 minutes a day 5 days a week. Eating healthy foods and monitoring your calorie intake will also help in the process.
Good luck.

I'm Currently Doing Turbo Jam it's really good you should try it too. If not kick boxing will take care of that fat around your hips or running/walking/jogging w/e's more convenient for you.
