Whiskers help the dog feel his way around. Whiskers are so sensitive that they can detect the slightest directional change in a breeze. At night, for example, this helps a dog walk through a room and not bump into anything.

The whiskers on dogs help them to react fast if they feel something touch their whiskers. Their whiskers sense air currents and vibrations. There are no nerve endings in the whiskers themselves, but the base is very sensitive.

QUOTE
Whiskers
Whiskers are the stiff hairs on the dog's face. They occur in clusters and serve as sensory structures — anything brushing against these whiskers stimulates Rusty to close his eyes, pull away, turn his head, paw his face, or shake his head.
Some exhibitors trim the whiskers of their show dogs, but such trimming may limit the dog's response to his environment and detracts from the natural appearance of the pet.

I think it is becasue of the same reason with a cat. The dogs can feel, sense things with whiskers. If a dog goes blind, or deaf, those whiskers help them around. They can sense things with them.

Same purpose it has for cats...for example if a dog was running away from a predator and there was a hole in the fence then once the whiskers touch the hole it will send a signal to their brain to let them know if they will fit through the hole or not. If they fit then they will run through, if not they will turn in a different direction.

They show the dog where to go, like if it's night and your walking your dog, it won't hit any trees because it's whiskers sense them. They also can be used to determine whether there is a storm coming or nor, like whether they should take cover.

A dog’s whiskers are sensory organs. They alert the dog to move his head away from an aversive stimulus, and operate as feelers to help the dog navigate in darkness.

Whiskers sreve to let the dog know how things feel and how tight spots are. They are sensitive to touch and they use them as part of their senses.
