it takes a while,.... these things must be contemplated.... and well thought out...no two sides are alike... some times there are holes in one side or the crust has separated from the bread..or one side is uneven or thicker than the other side.... you see my dilemma..... of course in the end it never matters because the side I butter will inevitably fall on the floor ... and one of my dogs will reap the reward of my carefully planned toast....lol...

I always put butter on the side closest to the opening of the bread bag. It is usually a little dryer and therefore easier to spread the butter on. It is also convenient because I put my hand on the inside side of the bread to remove the bread from the bag and it ends up saving me a little over a half a second my my well earned time to do it that way.

About 1.3 minutes. First I have to examine both sides of the bread to see which is more brown/black. Then I have to test the density of the crust using just my hand and a candy thermometer. Finally, I check the temperature of each side to make sure my just-out-of-the-fridge cold butter will be soft enough to spread.

No time. I only care if there's nothing on it and I want something on it. If one side is up, I'll go with that one. I don't flip it over ten zillion times debating whether the butter should go on side A or side B.

This reminds me of a trick I like play. When making someone a sandwich, especially with mayo, I will ask, do you want mayo on both sides of your bread? Most people reply that that do, then I say, well aren't you going to get it all over your hands if I put it on BOTH SIDES of your bread?
