How often should you bathe your dog (50 pounds, German Shepperd-Collie Mix)

And is there a proper way to bathe him/her right?

You really aren't supposed to bathe them more than once a month, it can dry out their skin too much. But of course, if your dog is like mine, dirt seems to always just jump on him. For the most part, I will hose him down or rinse him off more than I will use soap and water. All my dogs are over 50 lbs, and some don't like the water, so to make things simple for these ones, I will tether them to a tree while I am bathing them. Then when I release them, we run and play and make a game out of drying off with the towel. For those that are more bath friendly, they get the VIP treatment in the tub. And again, we run all around the house with the towels. Yea, a little water gets sprinkled around, but it dries and we all have fun.

I would only bathe when your pet smells and really needs a bath.
If you bathe to often and once a week or two weeks IS to often you can dry out the skin. Dogs have a natural oil in the hair coat and they need that to make them shiny and keep the skin for being flaky and drt and itchy.
Use only a shampoo made for dogs and be sure to rinse very very thoroughly. The rinse is the most important part. If you leave soap in them they will itch.
Mine only get a bath about once evey three months or so.

No more than once a week. Be careful with the type of shampoo also. Never use human shampoo if it can be helped. J&J baby shampoo if human has to be used (ok for puppies and doesn't burn eyes). Flea and Tick can dry the skin if used to often. If you do bathe once a week, alternate F&T and oatmeal shampoos.

Also ask you vet for recomendations.

As far as bathing: the proper way to bathe a dog is to wet his/her hair (warm running water is prefered to dumping dirty, soapy water back over the dog with a cup to rinse)...shampoo (dilute slightly with water to just barely runny if it is a thick shampoo) starting at the head (it is ok to put it into the dogs ears as long as you have warm running water to rinse it out with) wash down his back to the tail...wash under his arms and down his legs (front and back)...wash his belly (wash both sexes private areas-careful not to get soap inside!)...now for the worst part of the job....the anul glands!....anul glands need to be expressed (the dog can spray like a skunk if you don't)...if you have never been sprayed by a nervious dog, count yourself lucky!....Anuls stink!...Rinse your dog with warm running water, NEVER rinse with a cup out of a drawn bath (think about it, your rinsing your dog with soapy water)...make sure you get ALL the shampoo off, it could and will irritate his skin if not fully rinsed....(if you can't make yourself do this, take your dog to the vet and have the vet do it or have a groomer to bathe you dog...you may have to request the anul cleaning.

I try to bathe my golden retreiver once a month but sometimes longer depending on the weather. It's just like washing your own hair, scruby scruby!! she tends to have dry skin in the winter but oatmeal dog soap really helps with the flaking on the belly. some soaps will burn the eyes so try not to soap the face unless it's tearless & be careful when getting the ears wet. sometimes it's easy to get water in there & it could lead to ear infections, so it wouldn't hurt to clean the ears after a bath. most stores that sell pet stuff usually sell ear cleaner that you squirt in the canal, rub ears & then put a cotton pad/tissue/papertowel over your finger & clean the canal gently & around the outside. my dog loves this for some reason. if possible do it in a bathtub where you can use warm water instead of a hose outside w/ cold water. no one likes that cold shock even when it's hot out and it'll make them afraid of the hose (which my dog loves to drink out of!)

Once a month should be fine, if you bath them too often it will dry out their skin. And there isn't really "the right way" to do it. Just whatever works for you. I just put mine in the tub, soap them up and use a cup to rinse, if you have one of those detachable shower heads that would be even easier.

I don't have a dog... I don't even like dogs! I'm a cat person. But, if I would have a dog, I'd take it to the groomer once a month, plus, I'd wash it off with a dog shampoo and the hose in the yard once a week. It's not only fun for the dog, but also refreshing for the owner, specially when it's super hot outside! Now, if its cold, just scratch it off your list and wait for your groomer's appointment!

every month or so depending on the dog and how long of hair. there is no proper way as long as the wash all the soap out because if the soap is still in the fur it becomes irritated and u will notice the dog itching a lot thinking its allergies especially to the soap but its just because u didnt get all the soap out

wash from the ears back. Do not get water in the ears since that can cause ear problems( vet told me). Make sure to get all the soap off the coat and stomach since dried soap can cause the dog to scratch ,which in turn brings on skin conditions and vet bills. About once every two weeks should do it, but it is according to how dirty the dog gets.

Not too much. Dogs also have oils in their skin that helps keep their skin and coats from drying out. If they are scared, start from the back and work up. Use alot praise and talk to them alot. If all else fails, take a bath with them!

If you bath a dog too much their skin will become very dry. Its best to only bathe them when they feel oily or if it is evident that they need one. (smelly) Also your vet can recommend how often to bathe due to the breed or type of dog you have..like long fur and that sort of thing. Good luck! Eva
