“You are Peter, and on this rock I [Jesus] WILL BUILD MY CHURCH, and THE POWERS OF DEATH SHALL NOT PREVAIL AGAINST IT.” (Emphasis added) -Mt 16:18

Do Protestants believe that the powers of death did prevail against it until modern day Protestants came about?

I trust completely in what Jesus (God in the flesh) said, how about you?

Keith B. -Sorry but I think the quote I gave is clearly referring to the Church that Jesus founded, not about the martyrs getting killed. Plus, the martyrs getting killed is not a victory for Satan but it is what sows the seeds of the Church.

Jesus did build his Church, the Catholic Church, and the powers of death have not and will not prevail against it. The Catholic faith has millions of followers all over the world and the Church is growing every day. I'm sure some Protestants believe that their modern day church is the true Church but there are a lot of misinformed people out there.

Dear sekthe truth,

I believe the verse states and the gates of hell shall not prevail aginst it. If you read Deuteronomy 32, you will see that the "Rock" is the Lord Jesus Christ (God Almighty). So Christ is building His church on His work, not ours. Incidently, the Lord is NOT speeking of the local congregations (churches). He is speaking of the eternal church which consists of all those who are born again. You see in any local church there are saved (wheat) and tares (unsaved). We cannot see the heart of anyone but God can! I suggest you read Matthew 7:21-23 to understand this. Let me also refer you to www.familyradio.com. I hope this helps.

OK what is the Church? A building of stone and wood? I think it's a temple for the Spirit of God. The Spirit of God indwells each believer. He receives us by faith Thur his shed blood and adds us to His church. No man gives us this gift not even Peter. The church lives inside all Christians. Do we have some differences.. sure, who cares, it's Jesus that's important. We (Christians) all hold our Lord up as God. What else matters?

Man i love you in the Lord, but somebody lied to you and you swallowed it.
This rock was not Jesus, it was Peter's "confession" that Jesus was the Christ. Peter "believed" what the scriptures said about Jesus. The rock or foundation or base the church is built on is "faith that Jesus is the Savior". The powers of death can destroy just about anything but faith. That is faith in Christ not any denomination-including Catholicism.

Peter was indeed who Jesus was speaking to, but the rock that Jesus refers to was Peter's belief that Jesus was who He said He was.

So the rock that the church should be built on is faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.

Death is spiritual seperation between us and God.

Whoever puts faith in Jesus as Saviour is part of the church and saved.

So no, as a Protestant Christian, I would never doubt Jesus when He tells us that faith in Him is what brings us to the Father.

out of context. Read the whole chapter.

In 16:16 Peter tells Jesus, "Thou art the Christ, the Son of the Living God."

In 16:17 Jesus tells Peter, "Blesses art thou, Simon Bar-jona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it (being what Peter said in 16:16) unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven."

Then in 16:18 Jesus tells Peter who he is and upon this rock (being that Heavenly Father has revealed this unto Peter that Jesus is the Christ, the foundation).

For one thing Jesus is not God, He said He was the son of God and in the Bible not one time did He say otherwise. The Bible tells the Truth as it is. You really need to read it for yourself instead of listening to your pastor. Jesus followed the Ten Commandments . When He said Love your nieghbor as yourself, He was trying to simplify it for the people to where you didn't have to remember every rule. To say Jesus is God is bearing false witness.

Did a protestant wrong you in some way? Do you need a hug? My how much time you waste out of your day so worried about the other faiths. Shouldn't you be volunteering or doing some charity somewhere.

That' not what Mat 16:18 says.

It says: ( New Internation Version)
"18And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it."

Plus we all need to read the whole things not just parts of it, this is about Peter's confession of Christ.

Hades referes to "HELL" not death.
