Driving while intoxicated was interpreted as mainly being drunk, thus the departments opted for a broader term that can include on narcotics or alcohol (Driving under the influence).

Nothing. Some states refer to the crime of driving under the influence of intoxicating liquor (DUI) as driving while intoxicated (DWI). It is essentially the same offense, although penalties may differ from state to state.
In Arizona, it is called DUI and a first offense is a class 1 misdemeanor in which the defendant must serve at least 10 days in jail (which can be reduced to 24 hours if an alcohol screening program is completed) and pay a fine of at least $250. A second DUI committed within 5 years of the first is punishable by no less than 90 days in jail and a $500 fine. The third offense is a felony, punishable by no less than 4 months in prison.

No one else has said this but at one time i am pretty sure they were different alcohol levels like a certain blood level is under influence and a higher level is while intoxicated. So a DWI would be worse than a DUI. Laws about this stuff has changed a lot and I haven't heard much about DWI lately. So maybe they are no longer separate. In any case it's state by state. They are state not federal laws so they vary.

They used to be called DWI's and for some reason they changed it. I think because you can get a DUI if you have anything in your systems, whereas DWI was only for alcohol.

I'm not absolutely sure, but I think one is a more serious offense. DUI, "driving under the influence" can mean that you're just a little tipsy. DWI, "driving while intoxicated", means you're full fledged drunk. I believe DWI carries a stiffer penalty, generally.
Like I said, though, I'm not absolutely sure. This is just what i've heard.

It may vary depending upon what state you live in but typically it's the amount of alchohol in your system. DWI is driving while intoxicated. DUI is driving under the influence. For under the influence, you may not necessarily be drunk you could be using drugs or something else.

Different states have different interpretations. But, generally, DWI-driving while impaired typically means alcohol while DUI means driving under the influence of any substance which can impair your driving ability-most places now just use DUI-as it includes alcohol.
