They're not being used, they're being paid to do a job just like other people who work somewhere...

It looks like you really haven't done your research...
As I have already replied, I will copy and paste. This is simply the result of my experience, but any Au-Pair web-site will confirm it.
No, this is not correct.
an Aupair in the US works a maximum of 35 hours a week doing baby sitting and light housekeeping. She is compensated with full housing and boarding in a private room (not with your child), and with pocket money in the 150 to 200 US a WEEK. Of course fees vary depending on the country and on the demand.
In addition to that, in the US you have to cover the Agency fees (about 5000 US) once a year, for the selection process, the work permit, the insurance, the flight to the US.
There are abuses of course, as well as illegal situations, but if one sticks to the legal approach, there is protection.
Note anyway that it remains an employment, not a vacation. There are lots of young girls expecting a free ride and a good time, and they are sorely disappointed by realizing that they are not going to play doll for a year, but there are diapers to be changed, work to be done, dishes to be washed, rooms to be tied up, and ironing to be finished, as in any household. For that work, they are paid - room and board are quite expensive. If they had to live outside the home, the compensation would have to be much higher.
