A handicap is the number of strokes you get for a ground of golf. A index is the number you use to look up on the slope chart of the course your playing so you know how many strokes you get or what your handicap will be for that round

Index - This was added over 10 years ago trying to even things out between gofl course. A person cannot play to a 15 on every course, some are harder than others. Your index may say you get 10 storkes on one course and 15 on another course.

Through the golf club that you play you can establish a handicap through what is known as the GHIN system. It is a computerized system that uses your last 20 golf scores to create a handicap and a handicap index for you. (it uses the best ten scores of the 20). Your handicap is the number that will be used on your home course. If your handicap index is a number such as 10.7, you will take that to another course and applied to a chart that has been calibrated based on the ratings of THAT particular golf course. All golf courses are not the same difficulty and they have all been rated by the local golf associations. (sanctioned by the United States golf Association) For example your local 9 hole minicipal golf course will have an easier rating than the West course at Winged Foot. Winged Foot being a much more difficult golf course (as shown by how tough it was for the pros two weeks ago at the US Open) Upon entering enough scores into the handicap computer a golfer is given two numbers. Their handicap which is the number used for their home club and the index which is taken and applied to the Index Chart at a visiting club to find out what their handicap is at THAT club. If you have a 10.7 rating at your home club your handicap at your home club may be a 10 but at Winged Foot it may be a 13 because it is a more difficult course but at the local muni you may be a 9 or a 10.

This is a layman's explanation, but, the handicap is a number that allows you to play on a even playing field with anyone at the same course. The index allows you to play on an even playing field with anyone at a different course. The index takes into consideration the different course ratings or slope ratings to again allow an even playing field for the players.

For example, my handicap is a 17 at my homecourse and my index is 15.1 taking into consideration the difficulty factor at that particular course. . My course has a rating from the forward tees of 129. I played the other day on a course rated 123, my handicap dropped to a 16 for that particular tournament. Hope that helps.
