Antioxidants help prevent cell damage caused by toxic chemicals in your body by kind of reinforcing the strength of the membranes around the cell. They can be toxic in large doses, especially vitamin A, which can cause liver damage, psychosis, and birth defects in one of its forms. Beta carotene, the form of vitamin A that we get from plants, is taken up by your body only as it's needed, so it's almost impossible to overdose on it. Vitamin C is water soluble, so your body flushes it out, and you need to get some daily. Vitamin E is another antioxidant, and it's supposed to be really good for your skin. There are others, but those are the main ones. Too much of a good thing is possible, so don't take huge doses of just one vitamin without talking to your doctor first.
