There is no true way to detect if a woman will go in to preterm labor, but one thing that I learned with my second child is that if your cervix is titled, that can often cause preterm labor. At your next ultrasound, you can ask for that to be checked. When the baby gets active, often times with a tilted cervix, the head can move into the birth canal, tricking the body into thinking that it is in labor. That is how my doctor described it to me, anyway.

I didn't know about this while I was pregnant with my first child. I started preterm with her at 18 weeks. I ended up on bedrest and everything else to maintain pregnancy and then ended up getting induced with her! My second one I started preterm labor at 30 weeks and delivered at 35 weeks.

Talk to your doctor or midwife about your concerns, as well! They are your best resource!

Well...sort of. Doctor can warn a woman that she is at risk of going into preterm labor because of complications she is having with the pregnancy. Really though, there is no way to accurately predict the exact time of labor.

No not 100%. I did and they had no idea. My son was born at 30 weeks and I was in preterm labor for 2 weeks prior to that.

I am not a doctor but I am trying to get preg and have done allot of reserch. I read that if you do not have implantation bleeding (when the egg implants in the uterin wall) you are more likly to be preterm. But! the bleeding is like a few dots so you can miss that very easily. Call your Dr. and your probably worrying about nothing hun. If you are preg. Conratulations! Enjoy every minute of it.

There are some risk factors (smoking, cocaine use, trauma [falling, car accidents, etc.], pre-term labor in a prior pregnancy), but there's no real way to predict in every case. Doctors still don't know what causes many cases of pre-term labor. Unfortunately it can happen to any woman.

I don't think they can tell. The only thing that can be done is at best a guess. If they look at your family history, they may get an idea, but unless there was a medical reason for going into labor early, they are only going to be able to do what you do - guess.

it all depends on the reason for early labor.i went into a rutine doctors appointment thinking everythiing was going well and that i was haveing one baby girl come to find out i was haveing two baby girls and i was going into labor 13 weeks early!i was rushed to the hospital and they were able to stop the labor for five more weeks they knew they were going to be early just didnt know when.and thats why it important to not miss any doctores appointments because they have steroid shots they give the mother that will help devolope the baby lungs sooner if they know she will go into labor early.

Some physicians believe that it is hereditary. You could look at the mother's female relatives. Otherwise, I don't think it is unless there are already serious complications.

Unless there are problems throughout pregnancy I don't think there is any way to predict it.
