oh- believe me i am an expert at this- i have had every color of the rainbow- when you first dye your hair, like lets say blue- at first it is super vibrant and every time you wash it it fades. true to your hair color dyes stay in alot longer because of the type of chemicals and they are permanent or semi permanent. . i know it sounds yucky, but what i do is not wash my hair for 2 days before i dye it, then alternate washing it once it is dyed. it lasts a little longer.

These "dyes" have a quite larger molecule size and are not designed to go that deep into the hairshaft. They are not Neutral-based(just have the color "undertone") that is why they look brighter at first application.
They typically sit on the surface and are shampooed out in days. Natural looking haircolor products are neutral -based and have a smaller molecule size to sink in deeper into the hair.
In order to get it to stay longer(but it won't stay that much longer) use HairColor reserving products at home. Color sealers and specialized shampoos and conditioners that seal the cuticle layer immediately after color application.
You could also pre-soften the surface of the hair when you have it colored to allow the molecule to sink in deeper.
Go crazy with your look if you want, but keep the hair as healthy as possible!

I think it's because natural hair dye colors look more like natural hair, so it's not as easily noticable that your hair needs to be redone. When you have an unnatural hair color it tends to be more noticable when it starts growing out or fading.

um did you lighten your hair before you dyed it. I don't know i got permanent black streaks in my hair and they came out within a week. I think different peoples hair can hold color better than others. Have you tried Manic Panic.( if that's not the kind you have been using).

The reason for it, have you seen blonde, Lt. brown, etc, last longer? It's because it is bleached, causing the color to be stripped from all shades, colour ,causing the lighter shades to last longer. That's what I was taught! Have you tried bleaching?-don't your hair will turn sky blue.
