I suggest that you go to your local humane society. They have some wonderful dogs that are sorely in need of a good home. Often the cost is only that which is medically necessary, such as immunization shots, etc.

If you are not interested in breeding your dog, the best place is definitely your local Humane Society or animal shelter. They do a thorough check on the health and temperament of the dog so you will almost always get a great pet. I got both my dogs at the Humane Society and was very happy with the shelter. The fee is very reasonable and it covers spaying or neutering as well as a complete check up and the first round of any shots needed.

If you do not want to spay or neuter your dog, you can go through local pet stores or breeders. However, most purebred dogs do not live as long and have worse temperaments than mixed breeds. If you go through a newspaper ad or something similar, spend the extra money to have the dog checked out by a vet.

I hope this helps and that you find a great dog.

If you plan on doing the best thing for you and your dog, the best place to start looking are the no-kill shelters. The dogs that are brought there are more likely to find good homes, which in turn means that they are generally good dogs. But before getting a dog, make sure that you are financially and physically able to support it. Dogs require alot of attention and keeping them healthy and happy is not the cheapest. Make sure you be realistic also in the size of dog you select, especially if you live in small living quarters.

1# best place is the local Humane Society. They charge usually just to cover the spay or neuter . You can get a puppy or an adult dog that could have some (or a lot) of training. Lots of Hollywood film animals come from shelters. Most have a return policy so if it doesn't work out you can exchange. Try getting that from any pet store.
You can get papered pets from shelters or breed rescue societies. Good luck and have fun.

Go to the shelter. There are so many dogs there that need good, loving homes. If you are really set on getting a specific breed, you can also look into different rescue groups. There are lots of groups that specialize in taking care of animals of a specific breed. I really wanted a Cocker Spaniel since I grew up with them and love their personalities, but instead of going through a breeder I ended up going through a rescue society that had saved my puppy from the pound!

I met this one dog at a bar. Wow, I didn't realize that she was such a dog, until after I had done my deed, and had woke up in the morning with a huge headache and her laying next to me. Damn, alcohol sure can be dangerous. I high tailed it out of there like I had a skunk on my head and couldn't get it off. So if your really looking to get a dog, get drunker that crap, and start talking to the ladies, I am sure you will find someone to take you home.

Rescue one from a Rescue group, Ask your Vet. Go to the dog pound. Go to a Breeder. Do some research on the internet under dogs.

The shelter. Aspca or the humaine society. I suggest a shelter because soooo many dogs get put to sleep each year because they can't find a home. Yes a breeder gives you purebred, but shelter dogs are more grateful.

Animal Shelter
Look in the classifieds

However:
research the type of dog you want to be sure they get along with kids, like to be alone when your gone, shed hair, etc....

Getting a pet is alot of work. They live 10-15 years on average

And when you potty train that dog, take him on his leash out to one area in the yard to go potty. Do that for weeks until he/she know the rules. You'll be so happy when you only have it pooping in one area of the yard.
