Yesterday night I found a dead bird on my patio, bleeding from its head all over the pavement. The blood is dried now and the bird is being picked over by some ants and flies, but it's mostly still intact.

How can I get rid of it without exposing myself to any disease like west nile or, however unlikely it is, bird flu? I'm a little creeped out and afraid to touch it for fear of catching some strange disease.

Get a shovel and throw it into an outside dumpster

If you're afraid of West Nile then contact Animal Control to come and get it. Bird Flu, though, is very highly unlikely. Or you can just get a garbage bag and pick it up using the bag and then throw it in the dumpster. Then wash your hands thoroughly. Don't get your face near the dead bird. Then get some soapy hot water and scrub the pavement to get rid of the blood. But if you really feel uncomfortable doing that, then just call Animal Control. Hope this helps.

Get some paper towels and a baggy.
Gather the bird up with the towels and shove the whole mess into the baggy and close it up.
Put the baggy into either an outside waste bin or other receptacle that the sanitation folks use... don't set it inside.
Wash your hands after the whole sordid deed is done.
You won't catch any disease from it.

You probably won't catch anything from it: Dead birds are a fairly common occurence here. But if it's creeping you out, you could use several layers of paper towel to pick it up and find a place to bury it. Or you could use plastic sandwich bags for gloves.

Well since we have this bird flu scare I would call my loca State Board of Health and alert them..they might want to test it..otherwise just use a shovel or glove and remove it to a plastic bag if they want to pick it up..

If your town has one, call the animal control officer or public works department. If not, get a plastic trash bag and shovel and just shovel it into the bag and put it in the trash.
