There is a man who lives in an apartment on the 30th floor. When leaving for work he takes an elevator to the lobby and leaves. However, upon returning from work he takes the elevator only to the 15th floor and walks up the stairs for the rest of the way. Do you know WHY??

Is the lobby on the 15th floor? Maybe when he left for work he did the same as when he came home. When he left and took the elevator to the lobby, you wanted us to "assume" the lobby was on the first floor.
Another guess...
Maybe the elevator only goes to the 15th floor. Some building are like this.

he's a shorty and can't reach the buttons above the 15th floor. only that doesn't make sense nowadays, 'cause the buttons are useually in rows, so he should be able to reach something higher. so either this is a story of a man from a while ago, a man in an old elevator, a shorty man in an elevator

He is vertically challenged and can press the button for the lobby on his way to work, but, coming home from work late at night and finding himself alone in the elevator, can only reach up to the button for the 15th floor and has to hoof it up the dark stairwell, terrified and alone, to reach his tiny apartment.

or the joke i know he only rides the elevator when people is around to reach it for him and no more people were left so he got off and walked the rest of the way.
