You should do research on the smaller breed dogs. There are some good websites which describe personality and health issues that some smaller dogs have.
There are things to consider with various breeds, Terrier breeds will need reinforcement even after they have gone through training, for little dogs they have very strong personalities. Some smaller dogs can be very vocal and quite yappy something else to consider.
I am not saying anything negative about any particular breed it is all according to the type that is right for you and your family.
I have been fortunate since childhood to grow up and be around a large family and extended with many breeds of dogs of all sizes.
I will say from my experience with the smaller breed the poodles are very quick learners and ease in quite well to a family situation, they are good with other animals and children. Also if any family members have allergies Poodles are a good choice along with many other small breeds since their fur does not cause allergy flare ups.
I am sorry for you loss and I wish you luck and happiness in your search for your next pup :)

First, how old are you? Not all small dog breeds are suitable for children. I would check your local animal shelter or contact some of the rescue groups in your area to see what they have available.
It's also a good idea, if you have a particular dog in mind, to do some research on the breed. That way you can find out the temperment of the animal, any health issues the breed may have, etc.
Good luck in your search and I'm so very sorry that you recently lost your other dog.

Boston Terriers are small, the most they weigh will be about 25 lbs. They are great family dogs and are very smart. They are great with kids. A neighbor of mine has a physically challenged granddaughter... and when she is at my house you can't separate the two of them...My Boston stays glued to her side.
Boston Terriers Rule!
Good luck in your search to find a new dog!

Chihuaha are good small pets. I have a terrier and he is small to medium, however they are very active when young, but the smartest I have ever owned. I also have a chinchilla, they are great pets, very gentle, active in the evening and night, so ready to play when you get home from school/work. The are quiet and do not smell.

Okay, I will admit I am biased, but I recommend getting an Italian Greyhound. They are the perfect housedog. They don't shed, drool or bark. I have heard them described as "co-dependent". In other words all they want to do is be with you. Mine would follow me around no matter what.
They can be hard to house break so you always have to start with crating them. It took me about 9-12 months to get mine completly housebroken, but after that she was perfect, an angel, until she died.
Good luck

Go to the AKC website and look at the small dogs listed. Do as much research on each breed you are interested in as possible. Take into consideration grooming needs, as well as exercise, and any inherent diseases in each breed.

I have a Jackabea (Jack Russell and Beagle Mix). She is about 22 pounds and is about a foot tall, maybe less. She is wonderful and so beautiful. Temperment is great, playful and very affectionate... I highly recommend one.

Try your local humane association or animal shelter. Most dogs there are already house broken and well behaved. You can search for them on www.petfinder.com

Look on Petfinder.com and Craigslist.org .
It might take a while to find a small dog in the rescues, but be patient and one will come up.
