The cooking method was first introduced by the western pioneer woman, Barbara Quisack. Because of the harsh conditions and ppor firewood supply in the western plains, the cooking method used low heat so the time was long.

As the popularity spread into the late 1870s, it became known as Barbara Q's method and into the early 1900s the name Barbara was shortened to Barbie, aka Barbie Q and later shortened to what we have today.
