Mostly small game, however, as a home defense weapon, the venerable .410 can be loaded with a slug round(40 cal.,by the way) and there is a shell available loaded with three .00buck pellets. they're also not likely to go through the walls and annoy the neighbors.

You can shoot things as big as a deer with a .410 slug. But you can kill something big as a elk with a 45 shell in your gun because that makes a .410 have more velocity.

i would stick to small game, because of the low power and small shot load keep your shots in the 20-25 yard range.beyond that the shot pattern is to thin and knock down power is nil..a 410 is really an experts gun as you have to be dead on target, poor choice for a kid.the20 gauge is much better, they can start with low brass and work there way up to 3 in mag shells as they get older.

Whatever you're shooting at better be sitting still or you better be a real good shot. A 410 is one notch above a BB gun.

I grew up with a 410 and if you practice and are patient you can bag squirrel, ducks, pheasants, rabbits, dove, quail, pidgeons.
