He did not have "eyes", he had one eye. He saw two pears on the tree, and took one. In other words, he did not take "pears", and did not leave "pears".

He never saw the pears on the tree...so he got none.

The way the question is phrased, it seems to me that he can "see to" the pears by taking care of them (i.e. watering the tree, and pruning the tree). He can do this simply by feel.
