As soon as she hears it, she runs outside and starts howling. A lot of other dogs in the area do the same. Does anyone know a reason why?

I don't think the high pitch bothers her because when she hears it she gets excited and starts wagging her tail. By the way, it's a musical siren.

It is just because dogs, especially puppies have a habit, my neighbors dog howls at everyone going by!!! My neighbor says its because her dog is loyal, she thinks her house is a palace, and she's trying to protect it from strangers going by! My guess: Overprotective! Trust me! This website tells why dogs howl!

The pitch of the music that the ice cream truck is playing probably hurts her ears. My dog howls at car alarms and sirens and I think it is because the sounds bother her.

Does the van have music or a siren like sound? If so, perhaps the noise hurts the dogs ears. Many dogs react to a hurtful sound by howling or "singing" as I call it!

There's probably a sound in the music that hurts her ears. Many dogs will also howl at sirens for that reason.

Well, the sound either hurts the dog's ears or she wants some ice-cream, but since other dogs howl, the sound is probably hurting their ears.

chances are its the high pitch noise that the ice cream truck plays. My dogs howl at passing trains when the whistle blows.

If you do decide to get your dog an icecream, dont let her have any chocolate. Chocolate (same as common house plants) are toxic to dogs and one ounce can kill a miniature poodle. My puppys (13 mo and 5 mo) dont do the same but if they are outside playing in the sprinkler with me or something, they will run up to the ice-cream truck when it stops. (they are trained pups and dont run up to any other cars, and only the 5 mo barks at them and guests, because hes younger and harder to train) I stop and get a chocolate sundae icecream and I will eat the chocolate and give them little pieces of the white ice cream to them then their happy. ^_^

He's just sing along with the ice cream music. That music attracts kids, why not dogs...

he likes the sound. Every time he gets exited and howls! Maybe you should buy him a vanilla ice-cream of some kind.
