my vacuum is like over 5 years old!

How long? Hmmmmmmmm sounds like you should replace it now; however, some of the old vacuum's are worth their weight in gold and if the motor isn't bad, take it to the dealership and have it refurbished.

You didn't say how old it is. And how often do you use it? Have you changed the dirt bag inside. If this is full the vacuum cleaner can't work any longer. When you have changed this bag it'll work as if it was new. Believe me.
