If I go through the drive thru, at say, Dunkin Donuts, I don't tip. It's a cup of coffee for heaven's sake. If I was out at a restaurant or coffee shop, I'd probably tip a dollar. That's if I only got coffee...

At a coffee shop with a line, nothing. Maybe if you got five special mocha-latte-frappa-soy coffees throwing your change (or a dollar) into the can is a nice way of saying, "Thanks for doing all that extra work." If you are seated in a restaurant, you should pay your server 15-20% based on the quality of their service. Although, if you've only had a cup of coffee in a sit-down establishment it's more appropriate to throw down at least a couple of dollars for taking up the table.

Depends. A cup of coffee from Dunkins or Starbucks gets no tip (especially if they have one of those obnoxious tip cups out, I HATE those!).

A cup of coffee at a sit-down joint (say Denny's or something) will get a buck, cuz thats the kind of gal I am.

depends, are we talking filter coffee or starbucks where you pay $400 for a grande light double carmel moca soy frappa latte and you tip in a big greedy bucket on the front of the counter? Tip the waitress bringing you a steaming cup of folgers, don't tip the big bucket, they all have to split that, even the sap who stands back there writing letters all over your cup.

Why tip for take out? The person just did there job; it's not equivalent to being waited on as in a restaurant.

If someone brings you the coffee then you do the normal tip for the water/waitress. If you buy it over the counter, then it isn't really needed.

You should base you decision on your evaluation of what good service is to you. The waitress/waiter has nothing to do with the price of coffee, but her/his service does.
