I'm realy worried about my little brother, he's only 6 and my mum took him to the dentist the other day and my mum's just told me that the dentist wants him to go to the hospital and have an operation because his teeth are all rotten. He has to have a lot of them pulled out and he has to get caps on the rest because they are all so bad. He cries a lot at night because his teeth hurt him, but I'm scared that if he goes to the hospital he might die because my friend's sister went to the hospital and she was getting an operation and she died and she was 10 and my brother is only 6. Can we not make his teeth better without him having to have an operation?

I think his teeth are rotten because he wouldn't go to sleep when he was little unless he had a bottle of juice. And my mum doesn't let us have sugarfree juice and soda because she says the artificial sweeteners can cause cancer.

Hi honey. It's understandable that you're scared, especially with your friend's sister dying, but you really need to try not to worry about this. I don't know what operation your friend's sister had, but operations on teeth are usually very quick and don't cause any problems. If he's crying because his teeth hurt him, they must be really sore and I'm sure you want him to feel better quickly. You said in a different question that you'd had cavities before, so you'll know what it's like getting fillings and things like that - don't you think it would be better for your little brother to just go to sleep and wake up with his teeth sorted? I think you should tell your mum about your worries so that she can help you, and you should make sure you set a good example to your little brother by making sure you take good care of your own teeth. Please don't worry, I'm sure your little brother is going to be absolutely fine.

It's okay to be concerned, but really the hospital is the best place for him to get the help he needs.
The doctors are experts and they will take a lot of precautions to make sure your brother is put in as little risk as possible.
I don't know what was wrong with your friend's sister but it was probably something very different than what is wrong with your brother. There is some risk with any surgery - but different surgeries have different levels of risk. The surgery for your brothers teeth is a lot less risky than many other surgeries. It is very unlikely he will die as a result of the surgery.
The good news is this surgery will help him feel better so he doesn't have to cry at night because his teeth hurt. The doctors will take very good care of your brother and he will feel better because of it.
It is good that you love your brother so much and you are concerned for him. You can make him a special card while he is in the hospital and maybe your mom will let you in the hospital after the surgery so you can read him his favorite story.
Your brother is lucky to have such a special sister that loves him so much.
I really think he'll be okay.

Chloe. Not all operations are the same. Dental operations are not considered high-risk. If his teeth are rotten, he could become deathly ill and have far more serious problems. You should talk with a dietitian and ask your dentist what kind of care he needs to keep his adult teeth from doing the same thing when they come in. Some children are extremely sensitive to sugar and just cannot eat them. How did they get in this condition? It is important to find that out NOW so that it doesn't happen again.

Sounds like your little bro may be a victim of bottle rot...where kids are juice drinkers and the juice rotted their teeth out. It's best off they put your little brother out for the operation because keeping him awake for it will be terribly traumatic. I'm sure he will have a great anesthesiologist and he's going to be just fine! When he gets home, just make sure the little guy brushes his teeth at night and in the morning and teach him to floss. A lot of moms think juice is a good idea all the time, but its just as destructive as soda for the teeth.
You are a sweet big sister to care this much. He'll be ok.

If they are that rotten they could cause an infection which could kill him. You should tell your mum about your fears so she can reassure you. Maybe your friends sister was having a higher-risk operation. They really do not tend to give general anasthetic to people without good reason. If he is in pain, this way is better for him. Maybe you should ask your mum if you can be there when she talks to the doctor, so he or she can answer any questions you might have. Please dont mention this in front of your brother, he may be anxious enough. Pray that God keeps an angel watching over him. Good luck.

Its not a difficult opperation and the only reason he is having it done in hospital and not the dentist is probably because its going to be a general anasthetic instead of a local one. That means they have to put him to sleep while they do it because it would hurt him too much if he was awake. Surgeons do general anasthetics every single day and im sure they know what they are doiung. Your friends sister was probably very ill and had an important operation that didnt help her. Your brother WILL BE FINE. Honestly.

He's only going to hospital to basically have his teeth pulled out. my younger sisters went through the same thing. baby teeth are easier to damage than adult teeth, so there's no judgement on his oral hygiene. when his adult teeth come through just make sure he drinks his milks, cuts down on sweets and brushes at least twice a day. all the things good little boys are supposed to do.
The only risk of him dying is if the car crashes on the way. he shouldn't even have to be put to sleep, a general anaesthetic will be enough.

He will have to have his teeth out, my housemate has to have an operation on his tooth as it is rotten and he will just be sedated as opposed to being under general anaesthetic.
Your brother will be fine, I had to have 2 operations last year on my ankle and I am fine, but can understand your nerves as I felt the same!
Speak to your borther's dentist/ GP and ask them to put your mind at rest.

He should be fine. Not all operations are major and teeth don't usually cause serious issues on operating tables. He will be fine!! Just be a good big sis and he will always remember how worried you were...when you are older you two will be able to laugh about it. :)
