Yes, they do exist, they come from Japan in the feudal era. They are actual meant to be guards of the empower of that time, they were trained to use stealth and deception to rival the power of the samurai, which in Japan at that time were royal solders of their landlord.
the samurai preferred combat technique is direct, straight forward and to the point and anyone who runs away is labeled a sissy gay f in Japanese..:) haha, not literally, but close.
and because of this mentality, the only way to beat a samurai in combat was to be better then him, this is not easy as it take a lot of balls (and training) to even considered to be one, therefore they came up with a way to counter that, and came the sneaky tactics of the ninja, they were guards (pretend as gardeners and workers) to the emperor by day, political assassin by night, their preferred combat technical is stealth and deception, which is cool, because they run away at the 1st sight of a samurai.
They run, hide and ambush the stereotype samurai who gave chase while shouting "fight me sissy gay guy in black!” They do not have a preferred weapon of choice like the samurai's sword the Katana, but use everything that is available to them, like the gardening hose, cutters, short knifes so on and so forth, their ability was amplified by the mystique surrounding them, myths and legends spread that a ninja can disappear into thin air and reappear to slice your throat from the back, ambush out of no where and kill you in your sleep, walked like the wind across wooden floors and so on, making them much fear by the average samurai, and of course, any political enemy of the emperor.
