Me and my friend were talking today about soda......

I think the normal stuff is better for you, my mum doesn't like me drinking the diet stuff because she says the artificial sweeteners in it are bad for you and they haven't been tested properly and they might cause cancer.

But my friend says the diet stuff is better because it doesn't rot your teeth and it doesn't make you fat like regular stuff does. But I'm pretty sure my dentist said that diet soda gives you cavities just as much as regular soda - is that true? (mind you, she's never had any and I've had 4)

What one is better for you? I know both of them are bad for you really and we should drink water, but all kids drink soda!

Yes, water is better, but lets face it - it doesn't taste very good, does it?! I'd stick with the regular soda personally, I don't drink diet soda because of the artificial sweeteners, but I do have pretty bad teeth now because of it. I'd recommend that you try to cut down on how much you drink, drink it with a meal, and brush your teeth afterwards or chew sugarfree gum after it. And just make sure you go to the dentist every 6 months and hopefully you'll be able to avoid any more cavities!

I am now 47, I drink soda, diet coke, any soft drinks whenever I have to take my meals. So far I have only two feelings in my teeth. My regular check-ups shows no cancer symptom. Now dear, do not be too cautious about the things that you eat or drink, of course, you must be smart enough to know what I mean.
As long as you go for regular check ups with your dentist and doctors, drink anything that you want. Sometimes, being inflexible with certain guidelines can make a person go mad.

I'd stick with the regular soda and just cut back a little bit. At least regular soda is a little more natural; your mother is right about the artificial sweeteners in diet drinks.

go with diet for health reasons ( and dental) I really wouldn't be concerned about the risk of cancer in diet soda.. cancer has been linked to sacrine (can't spell it) but not proven... or all diet pop companies would have billions of lawsuits against them if it was a concern... as for regular soda, avoid it for the sake of your teeth.. I see kids come in every day that have a cavity on almost every tooth because all they drink is pop ( I am a dental professional).. there is 10 teaspoons of sugar in each can of pop.. I would avoid it at all costs.... also diet isn't much better, but it won't ruin your teeth as bad and as fast... start drinking water ( I know.. boring) try flavored water

The truth is Neither. Your mom is right in saying the artificial sweeteners are dangerous. They are carcinogenic (cause cancer). And your friend is right in saying the sugary ones rot your teeth--not to mention add alot of useless calories to your diet. The best drinks for you are water, nonfat milk, unsweetened tea and juice. Period. Dont believe all the hype. I wont even be letting my daughter have gatorade or kool-aid.

Both are as bad for you as the other.... The best way to deal with this is fizzy sparkling spring water mixed with fruit juice. Go cocktailing girl. Make your own. Also never clean your teeth straight after drinking those pesky soda's as the chemical mix helps take the enamel off them.
