Yes you do but not to start work, numbers are only issued when you have a job. When you start work your employer will give you a temporary number, if they will not it is their legal requirement to do so. when you start work you must contact the employment office and arrange a meeting then they will issue you with a number. It is stupid but that's how it works, get a job first then apply for a number.

If you are a resident in the UK were you born here? Did you emigrate to here legally?If you are an assylum seeker are you a legally registered with papers. Look in the phone book for the government office or try your local job centre. If you are an illegal assylum seeker you may be deported if you do not have valid documents

Yes and you can only get one if you are a British citizen, you can apply for a temporary one from the department of work and pension which will enable you to be eligible for work in the UK.

you can either go to the Department of Health and Social Security, or leave it to your Employer who can arrange one as a matter of course.

He might NOT like doing it though !!!!
