If you mean to get the fleas off your pet Dawn dishwashing liquid instead of doggie shampoo will work, but fiddo needs to be bathed at least once a week add a tablespoon of hair conditioner to the dishwashing liquid. I have done this for both cats and dogs for years sucessfully.

The home remedies that I've seen work are more prohibitive than just buying a flea treatment and then a flea collar afterwards. If your pet already has fleas, the best thing for him is a flea dip. I've never seen a home flea dip that worked as well as one from the pet store.

However, to help prevent a flea infestation there are few things you could try:

- feed your pet a bit of garlic at the beginning of the season, the chemicals will coat their skin and fleas can't stand the smell. Yes, your pet's breath will be disgusting, but give him/her a "Greenie" chew or two and it will go away.

- another solution is to slice a lemon into boiling water and then turn the heat off. Let it stand for a day, and then put it into a spray bottle and spray your pet's coat 2-3 times a week. As I said, it's almost easier just to get a flea collar, most pets aren't fond of getting hosed down with water that often!

Hope these tips are helpful.

My mother in law told me this one...sprinkle salt on all the rugs, carpets, etc. Leave it for a day or two, then vacuum it all up. (Be sure you get it all, cause salt draws moicture, and can also cut the fibers in the carpet.) The salt kills the fleas by "drying them out" (according to my mother in law) I've tried it, and it worked for me. Can't hurt, and it might help. I used canning salt, that comes in big bags and is coarser, so it was easier to clean up,

I know that fleas do not like the smell of eucalyptus leaves, I don't know if you have any around but you could also maybe use eucalyptus oil. I have used the leaves on dog houses and it works very well

Sevin dust available at home stores (Home Depot. Lowes) works great and is harmless for the animals. You put it on the dogs and all around your yard.

This won't help right away but, plant pennyroyal around the house and you can also use it as a spray on rugs, etc.
