If you have a Costco nearby you can get all you need for a reception. You can serve appetizers like buffalo wings, filo pastry, crabcakes (costco sells canned crab meat for about 11 bucks and follow the recipe on the can), shrimp plate with sauce, quesadillas, and mini quiches. You can get a veggie plate and/or cheese and cracker plate. You can also buy wooden skewers and put strawberries, kiwi, and melons on them.

Then serve lemonade, ice tea, coffee, beer, and wine. You can also have table with a wedding cake (go to Michaels Craft and get 3 tiered cake set and make your own cake with frosting -- then decorate with daisies or edible flowers, if you want you can add chocolate biscotti and italian cookies.

Call a caterer and have them bring an assortment of foods, like appetizers and munchies, and serve them either buffet or family style. Don't make the guests suffer with Costco veggie plates and frozen appetizers because she invited too many people and now can't afford it. Remember, these people are doing the courtesy of showing up to witness the wedding and share in the day - honour them by treating them well. It doesn't have to be Trump extravagant, but there is nothing worse than giving up a weekend day for bad food and no drinks at someone's wedding. Cut the guest list and spend the extra money on making the guests feel like honoured guests rather than cattle. I hope all goes well for your sister!!

I would think pasta would be too heavy for a 2pm ceremony. My ceremony is also at 2pm which allows us to not worry about feeding everyone a real meal (it's not meal time). However, people usually go to a wedding expecting food so we're having homemade desserts. A huge variety of desserts. Mexican wedding cakes (which are cookies) and mini-cheesecakes and bon-bons and chocolate fountains. We'll also have the bride and groom's cake. If it's outside and it will be warm, I'd choose something that will not melt or taste bad warm, like the cheesecake wouldnt be ideal, but cookies, brownies, pies, things that like would work nicely. If you want it to look elegant make everything in individual servings, the pies will look great in small tart cups for crust. You can also simply serve cake and punch, or if you like, try homemade ice cream just to cool things off on a hot summer day at a backyard ceremony.

Hi, I'm assuming its a summer wedding?; The food could be related to the theme of the wedding (if it has one), if not, inexpensive food (which could be home-made) such as Italian food, would be great to serve 'buffet style' at an outdoor wedding. Make sure to get the metal serving trays with the Sterno cans, to keep food warm, and add side dishes good for all guests to try (such as several types of salad, different types of breads, maybe some quiches or deviled eggs for H'orderves?). Add fun summer cocktails, with citrus into it (such as frozen slices of oranges and lemon, as ice cubes, which add an extra little flavor and look fabulous!!). The idea of the type of food really has to do with how elegant/casual the wedding is going to be, since it could be Asian food, Mexican food, Thai, you name it!. Try to narrow down the style of the wedding, and the kind of food should really come easier ^_^

Best of luck!!

For a 2pm wedding, you are not obligated to serve food. Why not keep it minimal. Pick 3 or 4 types of coctails or beverages. Then for food, have a fruit platter with a big bowl of hershey's chocolate sauce for dipping. Add marshmallows, pretzels, whatever people like to dip, and a bunch of pretty toothpicks. If you want to add more, you could also have a veggie tray with some sort of veggie dip, and mini-sandwiches.

Serve hors d'overs sonce lunch time has pass. You can have a coctail time instead and finger food. Youc an go to Sam's club or any other wholesale grocer and by all sort of small snacks. You can arrage them on plates.
Crackers, dips, cheese squares, fresh fruit, cold cuts, lil- smokies, small meatballs with sauce, crab cakes, little sandwiches, etc...the possibilities are endless....

Pasta --you can make a ton of it for not a lot of money
make it buffet style and have a few different types of pasta
a few different types of salads
fruit
veggies
maybe beef sandwiches--not too expensive
serve appetizer foods--pizza, egg rolls, those little hot dogs rolled in a cresent roll, dips/chips
have a little bit of everything-it will satisfy everyone's tastes
if the backyard is elegantly decorated, the food won't be the focus. people will eat just about anything you give them...

A big sandwhich some salads (macoroni, potatoe, and leafy) a few drinks and small dessert assortment like italian pastry, cookies, cupcakes. None of these things should be too expensive and home cooked is always a perfect way to go.

since it's not lunch or dinner how about a "tea-time" theme? you can serve tea sandwiches and mini dessert cakes (petit fours/ tartlettes etc). it would be very lovely and it won't even look like you are on a budget. :D
hope this helps!
