I am an Active Duty Marine. I have been in for 4 years. 27 months of those 4 years have been spent in Iraq. I was working with 1st Light Armored Reconnassance when we went over the berm in OIF I. I was with the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit working in An Najaf in Southern Iraq against Muqtadah Al-Sadr and the Mahdi Militia during OIF II. I was with the 2nd Marine Regimental Comabt Team during OIF III. I am not planning on going back. I am with one of the most highly deployed units in the Marine Corp. I have seen way that Saddam and the Bath Party was treating the Iraqi People. I have had a few hard times. The Marine Corp is too small to occupy a large area effectivly. We go in and kill as many bad guys as we can in a week and then turn the area/city over to the Army to take occupy while we move on the next high-interest area. For the most part. When we were occuping Najaf, we dropped roughly 5.5 million dollars into the local economy. We build 30 schools. Installed a sewer system. Water Purification plant. Rebuilt a lot of the buildings that we had to destroy to get to the Mahdi Militia. On the Syrian and Jordanian borders, we trained and worked with the Iraqi Army and Border Guards to keep Foriegn Fighters/Jihadists/Mujadeen out of Iraq. Iraq is a country that has been oppressed for the last 50 to 60 years, if not longer. Thier oppression started with the British (I have nothing against the British. Having worked with the Royal British Marines and the Australian Army, I have come to respect them and the way that they work.) after WW One. Since then the average Iraqi has been uneducated without any source of education, unless you were politically "correct". I have seen the way that they lived. The way that we are helping out is exremely effective. But as a Marine, we have done so much to help the the Iraqi's. Yes, we fight hard, we kill a lot of bad guys, but we do rebuild the things that we destroy., or at least put forth an honest effort to rebuild things. However, we are just too few to hold an area for a long time.

If you join the Marine Corp, good for you. I am proud to be a Marine, and plan on being in for a long time to come. A small suggestion though. Talk to three or four recruiters. See if they offer you different jobs. Get a job that you like and that has a lot of potential to get you a good paying job in the civilian world. Do NOT be blinded with Bootcamp. Think of the job you want after Bootcamp.

I hope this was helpful and informative. Good luck.

Marines certainly get to see a lot of action. But, there's a drawback that usually goes unmentioned. When the Army and the National Guard have to occupy and repair the territory that the marines have captured, they get to see the sense of the whole thing begin to take shape.

My son-in-law was in the initial invasion of Iraq (Army 3rd ID) and had a hard time of it when he came home. On his second tour of duty he got to work closely with Iraqi citizens while they worked to create their own nation (from scratch). He came home this time quite impressed with the Iraqi people. It has helped him deal with the bloody part of war.

Our friends' sons, who are Marines, never get to stay in an area long enough to talk to the local people. They have to go on to the next battle. They never see the benefit to killing the bad guys. They never see the neighborhoods blossom after the oppressors are gone. It wears them out.

So, I vote for a branch of service that not only sees some action, but sees the local people afterward. Not only did Mike get to enjoy the company of Iraqis, he got to pack up the U.S. base and come home. Job accomplished. You'll never get that feeling in the Marines.

But, then you'll never read about it in the New York Times either. So, wherever you think you should be, go there...

Did you have a certain Marine in mind? Some make great husbands & some you want to run the other way from. Just like all men.

I think it is something that you have to decide on your own is right for you or not. I am sure you understand the risks and the rewards. You may be a little safer in the Navy. Whatever you choose, God bless you! Good luck!

Good! go out there and help your country! Even though we do need more people trying to teach Bush some sense...but then again, it would take way too long! Don't get me started on my political opinions... :)
