I am bringing home my lab today. The vet is using a "cone" that will be around my dog's head to prevent her from licking her stiches. Someone told me that some vets send home a substance that you put around the wound that has a bad taste to prevent this from happening. Anyone use this? It would be nice to know what I am asking for when I go to the vet today. Thanks!

Neutering is done with male dogs and females are spayed. Ask your vet what they suggest

My dogs are males and the biggest challenge I had with our Golden, the Aussie and our Berner was keeping them from bolting about! Our Berner did not seem affected at all and we did not need the cone. Heck - he chased a squirrel up the tree as soon as we got home. He was fine - I about had a heart attack!

Simply check the area for signs of redness or discharge. I would not recommend applying any substances around the incision without consulting your vet first.

Great decison to spay/ neuter!! Give your baby a belly rub for me!

Keep her from running around a lot. A friend of mine got her dog spayed (not neutered that's for males) and she jumped and she ripped the staples out and caused bleeding and her organs were visible, so she had to get rushed to the vet but they didn't make it. I don't want to worry you that's so unlikely to happen its unbelieveable but keep her from running and jumping a lot until the skin has healed enough to not pull apart so easily. My male dog got fixed and all he did was lick he didn't do anything else... he didn't even have a cone. If you're that worried about it, I would buy the stuff.

Bitter Apple is sold at pet stores. Ask you vet about spraying this on her. Also ask the vet for pain meds for a day or two, if they don't give them to you. A lot of dogs freak when a cone is put on them. I've found that most dogs will leave their stitches alone. You just have to watch her.
She should not be allowed to run, climb stairs for weeks after this surgery.

just let her rest, she will be good as new the next day. it would be best to stay with her for 2 days after her surgery to make sure the wound stayed dry.

i have my dog spayed last month and after 2 days she's already playing with the other dog. the vet did not put any cone or something for her stitches.

I believe it is bitter apple that you are referring to. I tried it a long time ago and it didn't work on my dog. Use the cone - believe me it will help you keep your sanity. If the dog is closely supervised (and I mean closely) you can let her go without it to give her a break. Also, you will need to remove it to let her eat and drink. Been through this (spaying and neutering) with a few dogs. She'll be o.k. and so will you.

Good Luck!

Are you sure you dont mean Spaying? Only males get neutered. I think it might be bitter apple you are talking about.
