I don't know why it is that egg nog is only available in that season. It seems like it should be available all year, though consumption would always skyrocket around Christmas. Perhaps the companies who manufacture it found it was only profitable in the time leading up to the holiday season. As for it's availablilty, I used to work in a grocery store and we started getting shipments of it in around Thanksgiving. That's Canadian Thanksgiving too, which is around early to mid October.

Some grocery stores carry egg nog in cans. This variety may be available year round at our friendly neighborhood grocer (it is at mine). Just ask.
