My son is now 14. I was dating a man, when my boy was about 11 or 12, who shaved his head regularly and my son wanted to try it out too. My son also had a case of nits at the time (picked up from school, like so many kids do), so I was ok with getting rid of that particular problem.
I suggested we try the next thing to shaving it totally off, doing the closest thing to shaving with the clippers. So, we did that...he was happy for a few days but he wanted to try it all off...so we did that too. My son had his head shaved for a few weeks, grew it back, we shaved it again and then he got sick of having no hair.
He now looks like reject from the 70s....longhaired dude..ha-ha! Actually I'm being mean...its nice, not too long and has blonde streaks.
If your son wants to experiment with his hair thats fine and shows he cares about his appearance. Help him, praise him and let him figure out what ultimately looks best on him. They all go through phases.
And....if you are using clippers, read the instructions....trim the hair down to an inch, keep the long base of the clippers flat against the skull. Keep the strokes short and slow AGAINST the grain (direction of hair growth)...like you would shaving your legs. Be patient because it does take a while.

people have different definitions for "shaved". If you are doing it with clippers and a very close blade, that is truley not a shave. A shave means lathering the stubble left by clippers with shaving cream and taking a blade razor to the scalp. A clippered buzz is common for young boys during the summer months.

Shaving someone's head is really no big deal if they want it done, so I say go for it. It's not that hard, first you just cut his hair as short as you can get it with a pair of scissors. After that, just use a razor to shave off the rest. Just do it carefully you don't cut him. That's about all there is to it.

Do it. If it's ugly, he'll have summer to worry about it. If it sticks, you'll save on haircuts.
If you do decide to do it, you have to work your way down to the lowest blade, especially if he has long or thick hair. Cut first with scissors and then use one of the longer gauges first.
It'll be a laugh for both you and your son, I'm sure just as it was for me and my mom 20 years ago. Be sure to take before and after photos for prosperity. :-)

My wife shaves are boys heads all the time. Really no big deal. They like it for the summer and so does she. Besides they are very cute with their white blonde heads and big blue eyes.

If you are going to let him do it, it's best to do it in the summer when his hair will grow back faster if he doesn't like it. Plus his head won't get cold like it would in the winter.
