It's just another way to show they have power. I don't understand why everything has to be about woman's rights. What difference does it make.
I'm proud that I married my husband and I was proud to take his name.
Our world has to be SO difficult.

When I get married, I plan to hyphenate my name in professional contexts. I have already established a reputation with my maiden name, so hyphenating will help people to see that the same person did my accomplishments before and after.

I imagine other women do it to honor their fathers.

The tradition of taking your husband's last name makes it seem, to some, that you are the property of your husband and that you don't have any identity outside of his. I think you can see why this would bother some women.

There are actually pretty good reasons for having a hyphenated name, and if you ask, most people will tell you why they made the decision.

My last name is hyphenated because my sister-in-law has the exact same first and middle name that I do. Weird and kind of freaky I know. So I hyphenated my name so that I wouldn't get all of her stinking bills.

I just got married last year and hyphenated my name. My son has my maiden last name since I had him young. I married his now stepfather who obviously has a different last name. My son didn't want to change his so I hyphenated mine so that his school would recognize my last name with his and put two & two together. I have many reasons for using both last names but it's not like I expect people to remember or call me by it. They can call me by my maiden or married name and I'll answer to either.

Maybe there is a reason for it. My daughter has my last name, and I know if I got married I would want to take my husbands last name, but not have a different name than my daughter. I would have to see if I could and she wanted to change her last name, but if not I would hyphenate.

Why only limit this question to women? Just look at the number of hyphenated Pharmaceutical companies and Corporations.

All the names in the are supposed to remind us the proper lineage that is why they try to keep it.

If you do not know where you came from and constantly remind yourself of that fact, one may forget it; unless you want to forget and bury the past.

Every time I dig something from my past, it gives more meaning to my present. This applies across the board to our cultural heritage, personal as well as professional lives.

Then, may be that way one can find a path to correct destination for success.

It's just you... Honestly, I don't know. Coming from a married woman who chose to hyphenate her name, I can tell you why I chose to. I liked my last name, it's pretty unique and rare, but my husband still wanted me to take on his name as well. It was a compromise. When we have kids, they'll carry both of our last names. Why should I give up my name or not carry his name?

Perhaps they take on the hyphenated names because they want their surnames to represent their union with their husbands, but at the same time, they don't want to give up their own identity, either. Personally, though, I doubt I would even take my husband's name at all. I have a strong sense of my own identity, and plus, I like my surname (Hart).

I didn't even realize that women did this until about 8 months ago. I think that it is totally insane at the amount of women who are doing this! Is it a commitment thing or what? Either get married or don't but commit already!

they have identity issues. Like they have accomplished some earth shattering feat that they need their maiden name for.
