Can they ever co-exist? Looking at both in my opinion, I would have to say that they're basically two different ways of understanding the same world and can sound the same in many aspects. The only differences is that religion has God(s) and science has the Big Band theory. One has religious morals and the other uses human rational. One believes in a "higher power", the other believes that everthing is connected through organic means. Don't they both in a way make sense if you looked at their ultimate purpose. That being, understanding the world in which we live. Therefore theoretically could they not exist under the same roof? If not then (again, theoretically) what would we have to do in order to balance the scales to make them one.

yes, but both sides have to open their minds, however most 99.99% of christians and moslems dont have open minds. So unless they are willing to let their guard down, it will never happen

If a person had an open mind (which most people in religion and most people in science do not) they could see that science and religion do exist under the same roof. The Big Bang is sciences tale of creating something from nothingness. Who or what caused the Big Bang, who or what decided that after eons of nothingness let us now have a universe.

Even evolution, the basic principle behind evolution is that some creatures adapt to their environments, why some and not others. And humans, of all the creatures why are our minds so highly developed, it serves no practical environmental purpose. The basic principle of science is that every thing happens for a reason but who or what made the reason? I believe that this unknown force in science is what other people call God.

Here's how I have come to understand the world and this issue you're asking about.
Religeon and Science... can they co-exist...they have to! Science is called the study of life. Where did life come from?... if you believe in what the Bible tells us, you believe that life (including all life around us-and non-living things around us in the universe) is a creation of God. If science is the study of life, and life is created by God, then science is the study of created life from God, and is therefore a study of God. I am not saying that the trees and rocks are God, that you are God and I am God and the dog turd on the ground is God... what I mean by that is, by studying His creation, we learn more about Him. We see the intricate designs with which He created the universe, and how that attention to detail shows His love for us.
The theory of evolution... is still just a theory. Look up the word "theory" and you will see that it does not mean fact, something that so many people (not particularly you, but a lot of people) blindly assume. In fact, there are many evolutionists who are abandoning their evolutionary theories because it just doesn't line up with the discoveries they're making. In a recent Scientific American magazine article one of the world's foremost and outspoken atheistic evolutionists is coming to the conclusion that... there must be a God, because the more he studies DNA the more and more he is convinced that the idea that it could be an accident is absolutely ludicrous.
I'm sorry to drag that out so long. Apologies... it's just that there's a lot to be said in this subject. Good quesiton!
I hope this helps some.

There are many times they can co-exist. A theology professor once explained to a group that I was in that the theory of creation does not differ from Darwin's, other than in the concept of time. Time has been measured in different ways throughout history.

God created us, and he also gave some of us the ability to become scientists to help prove His accomplishments.

For those who think religion is a farce, I do not know how I would face every day not having a God to get me through.

It depends on on how developed your sense of faith is. If it's merely a veneer of wishful and uninformed thinking at the service of some "literal" scriptural rendition, then I'm afraid there can be no reconciliation.

There are, however, mature theologies which have no problem at all with both concepts. These concepts place God above parlor-trick and wizard paradigms. For example, they would say: "No, God did not personally engineer the details of the paramecium's flagellum. He is not going to reveal himself on the other end of a microscope or telescope. He did create the reality in which the natural forces that resulted in the flagellum can work."

Speaking as a Christian, here goes:
It is not science and God that are in conflict. After all, God invented science, and He knows more about science than anyone who has ever lived. It is arrogant theologians who think they know it all, and big headed scientists who are sure that they do.
Both groups need to be a bit more tolerant toward one another. When we act superior, all we do is show our own ignorance, and that applies to both disciplines.

Absolutely, science and religion can co-exist. As a matter of fact much of science can support religion. It depends on how you interpret the facts and observations of science.

This website has many examples of how the same facts can be interpreted to support creationism.

Remove theory from science. Everything else should be listed as theory. Same principle applies to our faithbuilding endevours, base on the premise that God of Love [Jesus Christ] along with His teachings exists.

I believe in both. science is often wrong but also right. everything science discovers is simply Gods creation. someday, science will discover God is responsible for everything including the Big Bang. Both sides are just to closed minded.

Actually science proves Christianity. However, many people will not accept this. Try to prove Christianity wrong with science and you will see the truth. Check out this website, it has articles from both sides. (Evolution and Creation)
