My guess answer is that it will help link computers with the Television as more internet movies become available. But I am not sure how this all works.

If you have digital cable you can hook it up through the firewire and it creates a better picture. You also can use it to hook up to computers, DVD recorders, etc. All you have to do is go to any electronics store and buy the wire--or Ebay has them for about a quarter of the price.

firewire is used more often on Macs or video/media equipment like camcorders, that sort of stuff you'll be able to link up. Media centers and PCs with internet movies are more likely to use USB 2.0

The fact that that most camcorders and stuff have fire wire and it has faster transmitting times then usb its probally so you can hook those types of devices up to the TV and get awesome picture and sound.

Fire-wire is what you will need if and when you purchase a high def recorder, as well as the other products listed in the other responses.
