if you are a good student, you feel like society says you have to go to college, i am in this situation

i want to look into trades, especially drafting, possibly from a technical school but everyone is assuming i'm going to a 4 year university and i feel like i'll let them down because most people in my extended family went to 4 year colleges (one went to a 2 year and one didn't go)

my parents call technical schools "refridgerator repair schools" even though they know nothing about them and that is just one program the school offers

is anyone else in a similar situation

does anyone have advice

the link above shows a program at a school i was interested in

You might as well do what you want to do because you are going to be the one showing up at work everyday. It may help to show your parents the statistics of college graduates who are doing what they planned to do and how many are forced to take other employment. Many are taking jobs that don't even require degrees because they are educated out of the job market. It would be wonderful if you can learn a skill through an accredited program, find a job and move up. Maybe you can get an apprenticeship and find some mentors in the field who will help you in order to convince your parents this is not the worst decision in the world. Good luck to you.

Are your parents paying for your education? This might change the argument you present.
Bring up the fact that trade schools can be very profitable. Show them that you will have a technical skill after graduation that people will pay you to use. Show them how working at an hourly rate CAN be more profitable than a salary, especially when you take long hours and overtime into consideration.
Do the research, present the facts, and be willing to take the step even without their approval. College is not for everyone and it is better to get a trade skill and be successful than to drop out (or worse, flunk out) of college.

I went to an automotive technical school instead of a 4 year college many years ago.
It cost me as much to go for a1 year program as a 4 year general education degree would have cost.
After I got out of school, I went into the trade, and discovered that even though I loved cars, I did not care for working in the trade.
If you decide to do this remember that the diploma is only useful in that trade> If you decide to change careers, you have no education and will have to start over.
It would be better to get your 4 year degree and then learn your trade.
I wish I had.

You have to do what makes you happy and if that what makes you happy then go for it. I have a friend that graduated this year and she graduated 2 years early. Everyone wants her to go to college bc shes very intelligent and she wants to join the air force instead and I gave her the same advice that I gave you.

I know this sounds rude but don't listen to your parents. It's your future not theirs. My parents don't want me to be a lawyer because they lie but I'm still very interested in it. So follow what career you want to do not what career your parents want you to do.
