A clinical diagnosis is one that is supported by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, edition IV (DSM-IV). There is no clinical diagnosis for compulsive lying, though it is sometimes called pathological lying.

Pathological lying can sometimes be a symptom of Antisocial Personality Disorder, or Sociopathy. Sociopaths are often decietful or manipulative in order to gain personal advantage, and do not feel remorse for violating normal social rules.

A compulsive liar is an individual who is capable of detaching themselves from reality. They make excellent spies as well.
They tend to be unemotional, adding to the difficulty of detecting them. They become highly believeable due to the repetition of their "stories" to the point that even they believe them.
