I also have thyroid problems. It takes months to get the prescription right.
Maybe he should see a specialist. An Endocrinologist is a doctor who specializes in thyroid problems

Hyperthyroidism is the excess production of thyroid hormone, which makes your friend's metabolism super high. That means he burns up calories really fast (causing him to lose weight), he may have a fast heart rate--basically his body is on overdrive. It is not healthy to continue for the long-term.
Generally if medication does not work, the treatment is either surgical (to remove it by surgery) or ablative (meaning taking some radioactive iodine such as I151, to effectively kill off part or all of the thyroid gland, so there is less thyroid gland to produce thyroid hormone). These procedures might be done on a hospital inpatient basis.

my husband has this or well had this Or also known as grave disease. he lost close to 90 lbs in 3 months his hear rate and blood pressure were thru the roof.. the only thing that has helped him was taking the radioactive iodine pill now he is hypo thyroid and gains weight and hardly eats at all there are other remedies that can be done such as surgery or keep taking the medicine. untill the person goes hypo thyroid. I onestly think the radioactive iodine pill was the best solution though as nothing else seemed to work

The most complete question/answer link I could find is : http://www.medhelp.org/forums/thyroid/archive/hyperthyroid1.html
Your friend has a serious medical condition which is treatable. If I were your friend, since he continues to lose weight, I would ask my doctor to refer me to an Endocrinologist for a second
opinion. The endocrinologist can possibly suggest a solution. Most people are envious of thin people, but thin people have problems, too. Good luck to your friend and to you !.

I went through over 2 years of constently changing the dosage of my medication until my doctor decided to have me do the radioactive iodine treatment.
It took two treatments over a 9 month period to get it right but it worked and I have been better for 4 years!
Have your friend ask his doctor about the radioactive iodine treatment.

He needs to keep working with his doctor to find something that works. I have a friend with a similar problem and it took years before they found a therapy that was effective for her.
If this doctor isn't helpful, he does have the right to try a new one!

his doctor will more than likely send him to a specialist that deals with thyroids.i have an under active one & i go to my doctor regularly for blood work & once every 6 months to a sepicalist,so far i'm doing good.is he/she taking their meds everyday like they should,if not that will be the cause,if so,more than likely they will remove the thyroid all together.not only does it regulate weight, but it controls the whole body.the thyroid puts out hormones, overactive it produces too much & under not enough.well i hope this helps.also try going to www.webmd.com its a very helpful website.if you need more help contact me

He shouldn't be losing weight like that, but that won't change until he gets on a different medication. Maybe it is time for him to see another doctor.

Really it's out of your hands, he has to help himself. It's important for him to stay on his medication and take it as prescribed, and make sure he is having blood work done to check his thyroid levels, but there is not much that you can do for him. He has to want to take care of himself.
