A 6 week old puppy isn't likely to have heartworms yet.
By the time there are symptoms, it is too late to treat safely.
Symptoms are a hacking cough, and being short of breath (having a hard time breathing)

Dog get heartworm from mosquito bites. They take a long time to develop.

Your puppy should begin a heartworm prevention ASAP. Since heartworms are transmitted by mosquitos any dog can get them. The vet I work for checks all dogs for HW when they are 1 yr old and every other year after that as long as they have been on heartworm prevention. Start your puppy on heartworm prevention such as Heartgaurd, Interceptor, or Sentinel, for best protection, from your vet. It needs to be given every 30 days forever!!

Your puppy would not have heartworms at this age. Dogs that have heartworms don't show signs usually until the heartworms are very bad!! The most common sign is coughing, usually severe coughing.

The only worms you should be worried about are roundworms(long noodle looking) and tapeworms( rice like worms). Those are the most common puppy worms, although there are several others. To be safe have your vet do a stool exam under the microscope!!!

you commonly do not comprehend until eventually the later ranges until eventually you're taking your dogs to the vet and performance her examined each year. maximum vets try this even as the dogs is on preventative. Coughing is mostly the first aspect you be conscious, then lack of potential. Heartworms infest the middle and reason it to ought to pump extra sturdy to get the interest finished. that ultimately leads to an enlarged heart and decreased lung function. Detecting heartworm diease is a consumer-pleasant blood try which will take your vet all of 5 minutes. so a options as dragging her butt by the rug, that could be worms yet no longer heartworms. it may also propose that her anal glands are bothering her. back, it really is something to inform your vet. in the experience that your dogs has heartworms that is a a series of two-3 images spaced out over some months. and then month-to-month heartworm preventative. no matter if that is another sort of trojan horse your vet will supply her some drugs which will sparkling that up and propose a month-to-month product which will deal with heartworms besides as severl different consumer-friendly parasites.

This worm is also known as Dirofilaria Immitis. It is a long, spaghetti-like worm that can be anywhere from 6 to 10 inches in length (~17 - 27 cm).
The signs vary according to number of worms present, stage of life cycle, age and species of host. The heartworms live primarily in the right side of the heart and lung, and can cause significant damage and even death. Here are some general signs for the most common hosts, dogs and cats.
DOG - possible heartworm signs.
Acute disease - usually no clinical signs (the dog just acquired the disease)
Mild to moderate - cough, reluctance/inability to exercise
Severe - marked shortness of breath, coughing, fainting episodes, weight loss, fever, abdominal swelling (ascites), death.

No signs. Just terrible damage unless caught early and treated. There is a chance of survival then.. At 6 weeks old I doubt she has been outside yet. Heart worms are from mosquitoes.

your puppy is heart worm free at the moment. Heart worms do not mature for 6 months.....start your baby on preventive at 4 months and keep him/her on it!
