To be perfectly frank, it doesn't take years so much as it takes perspective. If you're older than sixteen, then you've been through much of what it was like to be a sixteen year old of either sex (our experiences aren't THAT different).
If you're a female and he's a male, you simply have to remember how being a male is different from being a female in this society and try to steer him as best you can. I'm afraid an innate understanding of what it's like to be the other sex probably isn't going to be forthcoming no matter how much time you put into it.
If you need any specific questions answered from the point of view of someone who's a male, though, most men (including myself) would be very happy to take the time to help you as much as we can. Believe it or not, most men are a bit more in touch with their emotions than the comedians of the day suggest. =)

You never understand a 16 year old boy..at least not when he's 16! You may get some understanding by the time he's middle-aged.

How are you ever going to understand a 16 year old when they don't understand why you don't understand them. Its pretty hard to understand when you wake up one morning and cant figure out why the whole world does not revolve around you, especially when everybody older than you knows nothing and could not possibly understand a 16 year old, I'm sorry there is no cure for a misunderstood 16 year old just prey he grows out of it, before you have a nervous breakdown.

About 16 years sooner than it would take to understand a 16 year old girl.

I'd say it takes a good memory - remembering the time when you were a 16-year-old boy yourself. Otherwise, you're out of luck :) You have to wait until he's older.

Do you understand a man who is 30? 50? I myself will never understand them at any age. All I know from experiance is to realize I will never understand my teenager and to be more patient in these years. Good Luck.

Teenagers are rarely understood. As adults we attempt to understand fads and fashion of our children. There are few things we can truly understand because we do not have the same mind set. The best thing to do is ask. IF they are willing to talk then you have yourself and in. If not then talk to them. Let him know that you are present to talk with if they need someone, and truly be there when they do. You never know when it'll happen but it will.
